We have a 97 F350 power stroke Diesel 4x4 crew cab, long bed with about 130,000 miles. Whew! Lately had been acting like it had no get up and go! While towing a boat, the truck died (ran out of gas)? Guys were sure it was the relay switch. Truck has 2 tanks plus an auxillary 150 gallon tank. Well switch was broke. Truck is towed to our house and is still sitting here 3 weeks later! They have replaced the switching valve - sent from Texas ($100)and the electric fuel pump on the rail ($189) from Ford. Now, called my dad, He says check the manual fuel pump that there should be one on the engine. No one can find it? Any other ideas before I go broke? This has been a great vehicle and had just recently been having issues with loss of power. Right now there is no fuel in the bowl unless we put it there. New switch is working and still won't start from any tank.
Update: It started and ran. We turned it off, started it again and ran, but then ran out of fuel in th bowl.. Help!
I'm under the impression that there is a mechanical fuel pump on my 1997 PSD. Since i had some trouble thinking it was the fuel flow and when i turned the key on with the fuel filter out, the bowl did not fill up. The bowl did fill up while cranking the engine. I did not find any electric pump on the frame rail though i didn't look that hard. might look again when i want to get dirty. I did not look for the mechanical pump since i was getting fuel. Is your bowl filling up while cranking (filter removed) or is fuel coming out the schrader valve with the fuel filter in (with schrader core removed)?
Thanks for checking. The bowl isn't filling up at all. When it did start it was because we put gas in the bowl. We checked the power going to the tank pump and was only getting 7.8 volts. Not sure what the volts up to that pump was supposed to be. Since there are 3 tanks and none of them are getting fuel to the bowl, they are leaning towards the mechanical pump on the engine block. They cleaned the fuel regulator and the screen already. Does this sound right?
i kinow that your never supposed to run your tanks dry because theres sledge build up in the bottom of your tanks and when that gets sucked up you are gonna have some problems. i have had it happen to me in my f-550 work rig and i learned the hard way
