Help! Electrical problems.

I have a 1975 f250 with a 360. I just recently put a 4 barrel and manifold on it. I couldn't get it started and i spent some good time cranking over the motor. I tried it again today, and all i got was a bunch of ticking from the solenoid. I put on a new solenoid and it still just ticks, without the starter moving. It's not the starter, because i just put a new one in today. Does anyone have any ideas?

You might have ran your battery down trying to get it running. How old is your battery and what kind of shape is it in??? Do you have access to a battery charger to see if you can charge it back up?? If you do, check and see how many amps it will charge at and how quick it takes to charge back up. If you don't have access to a charger, take the battery off and have it checked.

If the battery is fully charged and you're still experiencing this try adjusting your timing. I've found that if my timing is too far off (can't remember which way) my truck won't crank. This has happened to me a couple of times when I've removed the distributor while working on the intake manifold.

Ivan that make's no sence to me? The timing and the starter are 2 complete different operation's. If your timing is off it would pop or backfire thru the carb or be very "jerky" in it's cranking mode. If your battery is sufficiently charged that starter will crank the motor over no matter where the timing is at.

This definetly sound's like a weak battery situation to me.

Could also be bad cables... Extended cranking on worn out battery/ground cables will cause them to expand more than normal then when they cool off and shrink they could break at a weak spot... Usually where it bends sharp or where the connectors crimp on.

All the above suggestions are a good place to start. And check all of them first. But don't fall into this trap:

It's not the starter, because i just put a new one in today
Depending on where you got it, the starter could have bit the dust. Either by overheating it from cranking too long(crank for 10 seconds, rest for 30 seconds), or a lousy rebuild from the store.
