I had the 4.6 on the XLT. It is more than adequate and actually kicks some serious butt. I ran it strong on the highways and had no problem at all passing. I now have the Lariat 5.4 and can feel some hp improvement. Problem with the 5.4L so far is it "feels" very tight. But then again I only have 600 miles on it. I've hit 90mph a few times pretty easily, but tight is how it feels. The 4.6 seemed to open up easier, smoother, and quicker.
I got the 4.6 and it has more than enough power for me. I had the 4.2 v6 on my '02 and with the heavier '04 the 4.6 feels equal to it as far as acceleration. I am getting 17-17.5 combo city/highway with the air on almost always.
I wanted the 5.4 and it was the only power option for the FX4. I'm the type that always wants more. Previously I had an 03 Mustang GT that I dropped around 5k in trying to get it to perform like a Cobra. This time I just went for it. Who knows, maybe I'll supercharge this one when they come out....Very later on down the road.
Got the 5.4, tired of buying the little girl engines to later find out the truck is underpowered for what i want to do. As fas as the gas milage, i bought the wife an Escape to offset my F150.
i like the power my 5.4 has no regrets about the milage differince what could it be .5 mpg just look around this site don't think youll find a huge difference
