Hi everyone! I am new to this site and you probably heard or seen this before but I am stumped. I have a 1992 Explorer with a 4.0 engine and a 5-speed transmission. My problem started about 2 months ago when the check engine soon light came on. I took it to AutoZone had them test it and it was sending the throttle position sensor code, so I got an new one and put it on and cleared the codes. Well the next time I went some ware guess what it came back on. I went and got it checked again and it was the O2 sensor this time. The O2 that was in there was not even a year old. I changed that and cleared the codes again. With all of this going on I lost some power and my gas mileage went down the pooper. I went from getting 260 mile to a tank to just about 175 mile. Any one have any thoughts on what could be the problem. I really need the help!!
My 91 Explorer w/ an auto transmission is going through a similar problem; it went from getting anywhere from 260-280 miles per tank down to 160-180 miles per tank...but then again Im also having tranny problems. My tranny wont shift into 2nd gear properly, and my brake booster went out too...
I hope that it isn't the tranny I replaced that last May and pulled the engine and put new gaskets, plugs that stuff in and the trany wasn't cheap I think I paid around $1200 for a used one from interstate. If you find out the cause please let me know!
As far as gas mileage goes, simple things go a long way.....check your tire pressure, air filter, fuel filter. The air filter & tire pressure on mine got me from 9mpg to 15mpg on avg.
check the wiring going from your sensors to your battery. I kept getting codes saying the sensors had bad voltage and everyone said they probably needed replaced. turned out to be croaded wires from teh battery to the relay. Mine ran like crap and got about 7 miles to the gallon. spent 250 on sensors when it turned out that i needed about 5 cents in wire and a 2 dollar battery terminal conector
I have done all of the wire checking and still the same old thing. The last thing to check is the FPR which I am goin to do this comming weekend hopefully that is the problem. If not then I think that it is Chevy time again. Thanks for the help!
