Aerostar Tranny Problem
This is my first post on FTE and my recently acquired 1992 Aerostar is my first ford truck.
Last weekend while carrying a somewhat heavy load and attempting to pass someone (tranny dropped out of overdrive) I noticed a huge amount of white smoke behind the vehicle.
The next morning I crawled under the van and determined that there was tranny fluid leaking out of the bell housing, turns out I had blown the torque converter seal.
Any way, I took the tranny out and had a local specialist install a new upgraded seal.
Now my question… Since reinstalling the tranny, I have severe shift shock when going into reverse, other than the seal nothing was done to the tranny and the shift shock wasn’t present prior to the repair.
Any idea what may be causing this?
I should also mention that I overfilled it a little (wont be driving it until I get the level correct) could this be the cause?
I read in another post that if not done perfectly that the seal would fail again, so I figured it was $50.00 well spent.
As for the removal and reinstallation of the transmission, it was relatively easy, and I hadn't done one on a Ford before.
There were no major obstacles that I encountered.
The only piece of advise I would offer is make sure the 4 studs on the torque converter are lined up with the 4 ring gear holes. (that cost me a little time)
Good luck if you go for it and if you run into difficulties, you know where to go for help.
