I was actually wondering, if we were all to get together sometime and wrench and drink, what would be your beer/whiskey/etc of choice? Cutts got me wondering on this subject
To make this a tech question also, what should I do to make my Dana 44 handle 35-36" tires?
I run 35's. I changed to currie axles and run a Truetrac. I've never had problems. I'll be upgrading to 37's in a year or so I suspect I may start to have problems then.
MGD for my loudmouth soup- to get 44 to survive 35's use the most worn out 302 you can find and some worn out tires to match, if you think I'm joking you should see my 82 bronco!!
I would love to run a Dana 60 but I can't seem to find one around here. I figure I will run my Dana 44 till I break something then go Dana 60. I hate to stick alot of money in a 44 just to try an make it handle what a 60 can stock.
Meeting would take place in good ol South Dakota!
Coors Light for me, or Seagrams 7 an 7up.
I was crawling around under the '75 F250 and it appears to have some cheap a$$ form of hydraulic assist steering, was this a factory option?
HA HA power assist....what a joke. Probably works great when the pickup is cold (as long as all the fluid didn't leak out overnight) and works like armstrong power steering when hot.
Yeah, it's factory. The best thing to do with that is do like anyone with a brain and throw it away and install a 78-79 Bronco steering box/draglink/tie rod/track bar. The assist systems did not work worth squat, especially when they were subjected to ANY offroad endeavors. The shaft seal would leak, the pressure valve in the draglink would leak...etc. Also, a certain amount of freeplay was introduced into the steering system because of the distance (not much, but it was there) the draglink had to move to actuate the valve.
As for the D44 and 35's, here's a funny little story for ya:
My friend has an 89 Chevy RC 1 ton. About 4 years ago he swapped in a solid 44 out of a 78 3/4 ton Ford. This is a 454 pickup and it did have a 4 speed and NP 208. He went to a TH400 and NP205 about 2 years ago. He uses this pickup for nothing more than mud bogging and drift-busting. He also, up until a couple months ago, was running a 250 HP shot of nitrous. The best part is, he runs 39 inch BOGGERS. Yeah, the diff is open (which is the reason it lives). He has had 1 failure in 4 years.....the left knuckle u-joint broke under 400 HP climbing the dirt wall in the mud pit (wheels turned). Tonight, I'm going to help him get his BLOWN 489 in the pickup and running.......that may break his D44, but who cares? He'll beef what needs beefed and keep running it. Way cheaper to fix a 44 than buy a 60.
I SERIOUSLY doubt you'll have many problems w/your D44.
Black and tan for me! Thats Bass with Guiness floated ontop for you non alcoholics here. Pro, Irish car bombs are real good. So Co (southern comfort) for whiskey, I like the cough syrup straight up. I recently heard this was Janis Joplins drink of choice. Although can't go wrong with 7&7's and a cube (30 pack) of Miller Lite!
35" tires on a dana 44 jeeps run this combo no problem but then again it won't be as heavy as truck. cut your truck down and put it on a diet to reduce its weight and you can run them no problem.
South Dakota is a bit out of reach just for a drink. Accually, I could use a vacation. Maybe when I was younger I probably would not have cared though. Would have been a good excuss to get out of school.
One thought on the Dana 44 and lockers. Obviously, the bigger the tires and the harder we wheel the weaker the Dana 44 will get. In its stock form, It's a weak a** Bas***. One of the things I'm considering since I too have the Dana 44 TTB front, is that ARB is coming out with a 35 spline Air locker for the Dana 44.
Tore into that '75 today. Got the front clip completely off of it so far. Gonna cut the box off after I eat, and hopefully lift the cab off it later today. Anyone have any suggestions for lifting a cab off? I've never done a cab before.
It will be cut down also, it will have a '67 F100 shortbox body on it when all is said an done.
