HP & MPG

I'm putting a cat back exhaust on my 2004 V10. What are some other "cheap" upgrades I can do that will help produce a few more horsepower and also help with the MPG? These gas prices are killing me....

-- for those of you that helped me with my exhaust questions, thanks!

I think the cheapest route for HP is the chip.

But as far as MPG? Well, like Donnie Brasco would say, "Forget about it!

I went out today and checked and the tank was still full on the SD!
How about that!

Buy a motorcycle! I got 43 mpg at the last fill up. 160 miles of spirited riding on 3.7 gal!

More cold air in will help build more hp. More hp will let you drive a little less hard to achieve the same mph. You are never going to get 18 mpg with this engine though. A cold air intake, switching to all synthetics will help a bit. Keeping your air pressure in your tires up will help as will a canopy/shell/tonneau. A free flowing exhaust obviously to get the burned gasses out is helpful too. But the biggest difference in one guy's mpg to anothers is probably their right foot. Ken

I don't think you can find a lighter right foot, I was born with a size 12 that must be made of lead. Let me know if you find a good foot dealer.

try growing up in California just when muscle cars began their reign with a size 15 foot. I lived around the corner from the bay area's largest Cobra dealer. After school we would ride our bikes to the Ford stealership and drool over the 289 AC Cobras. When the 427 monster came out in like 65-66 it was all I could do to sleep at night knowing that car was less than 2 miles away. Then came the Mustang GT 350's, then the Boss 302's, the Boss 429's and on and on. The Mercury Cyclones, the Thunderbolts, man oh man, it was an awesome to be alive during those days. The bad thing was I was not driving age, and I had no money, bummer. But to be around during all the hp wars was amazing. Now, we are going through another era of hp wars, and I'm raising 6 kids, aint life grand ? Which is exactly why I could rationalize my V-10, I loved the technology, I wanted some power, but I had to be practical, so I drive a V-10 extended length van. Yea it gets 12-14 mpg, it also surprises the crap out of people at stoplights. Ken

Get some duct tape, and one Grade AA Jumbo egg. Tape egg to gas pedal, and drive!

But...would it get better MPG? Or just give you that distinct pucker in the middle of the driver's seat?

Actually, if you want to get the BEST gas mileage, use a Grade B egg (thinner shell). They might be hard to find since they usually don't sell them in grocery stores.
