I am gonna change my oil out with 5W-30 Royal Purple. Does this sound like a good idea? Do you tihink I will get any better performance or MPG?? Thanks!!
I believe that's a full synthetic. I would say no perceptible performance improvement, MAYBE one mpg increase, but the best part is superior lubrication under all conditions = more longevity for the engine.
I use Wal-marts Super Tech full synthetic, alot cheaper, I change the fluid every 10000 miles, change the filter and top off the oil every 5000 miles.
No problems after 70,000 miles.
If you're driving out of town and needed a quart of oil would you be able to find the Royal Purple?
Never used the Royal Purple synthetic oil but heard it was a awesome product, i use Castrol synthetic and it works great i diidnt notice a mpg increase though....
I usually buy a case of Mobile-1 synthetic 5W-30 at Costco for about $22. I don't notice any mpg improvement. Like others have stated, the engine runs somewhat smoother. I am considering switching to Amsoil 0W-30 synthetic motor oil in the near future. I have friends at work who have an Amsoil membership so it is more cost effective to get it through them.
I have seen the results of many tests using synthetic (publised). Most of the tests indicate that syn starts breaking down about 5k miles. I decided to stay with dino and just change it every 2 to 3k miles. Seems to be working OK. I have also noticed that syn does make a considerable difference when used in a auto tranny. Far less heat, but I have also completely flushed trannies at 30K intervals with dino for several years. This has been on European cars, Mercedes, BMW, and Volvo's. I think that (just an opinion) that tighter intervals are very good for engines. I know a fellow who runs his Syn (He's an AMSOil rep) for 70 -80K miles, just changing filters and topping up. I'm too old school I guess.
This is unconfirmed, but I've been told that there are very few true synthetics on the market. By that I mean most of the "synthetics" out there are actually petrolium durivitives that have been chemically altered.
The two brands that come to mind as pure synthetics are Mobile 1 and Amsoil... At any rate I use Mobile 1, and I do a full fluid change every 6k and change the filter and top off at 3k.
Anyone else heard about fake synthetic vs. real synthetic, I got the info from an Advance Autoparts manger and heard it again from a Mobil 1 rep...
Mike968- You are correct in most of what you said-

Except..... Mobil 1 is one of the chemically altered synthetics as well.
Amsoil is a fully synthetic oil. I have been using it for years and love it! Liked it so much that I became a dealer since myself and my father use it in everything. It is expensive but offers far superior protection. If you are looking for amsoil at a lower price contact me about becoming a perferred member.
I think if you check out AMSOIL's website at www.amsoil.com it will answer all your questions. You may think synthetic oil is expensive, but in fact it's cheaper because of the extended drain intervals. All of their oils meet API's highest ratings and they will definitely NOT void your vehicles warranty. I just became an AMSOIL dealer and I use their 0W-30 Severe Service oil in my truck. It's rated for 35,000 miles/one year between oil changes, but I plan to get a oil test done at the end of that time because I've heard of this oil lasting over 100,000 miles. It outperforms every oil that it's been compared to in independent lab tests, even Mobil-1! Also, if you use AMSOIL filters, which also outperform the competition, you only have to change the filter every 12,500 miles/six months.
This was referenced a while ago, but here's a link to a great site that is doing an independant sythetic oil study. Give it a look and maybe that will answer some of your questions.
