Unhappy Fuel Pumps??

I've searched and read a pantload of threads regarding fuel pumps it appears that one or all of the pumps on my dual tank, '96 f-150 are going bad, or at least have problems, and didn't find info. answering a couple specific questions.

1) How long, typically, will fuel pumps last on a '96? (Assuming the fuel filter is changed regularly.)
Mine have been on there roughly 90K and was wondering if it is normal or not for them to wear out in that many miles.

2) When replacing them do any of the parts stores sell only the pump and accessories to mount it or does it come with the tank etc. as all of the online parts stores I've looked at so far have indicated. I haven't yet had an opportunity to go to the neighborhood parts place and pick their brains, so I'm posing this stuff on you guys!

I'd really perfer not to take my pickup to the shop, as that tends to get rather expensive really quickly...... besides that, I'm not aware of any reputable shops near where I live.

I wanted to check the code to verify the problem is in fact the pump as someone had indicated, with instructions, in a previous fuel pump thread, however, my check engine light has burned out, just last week. The light went out once before, but was the fuse, this time it's not the fuse, as I believe it to be on the same one as the cig. lighter, which still operates properly. The light no longer comes on when I turn the ignition on as the other dummy lights still do. I don't know.

I'm getting pretty frustrated with this thing. I replaced the fuel filter, plugs and wires, it ran great for about 3-4 days then the hesitation returned. I then inspected the cap and rotor, which were badly worn, and replaced them. Once again the problem went away for 3-4 days then the hesitation returned. It's intermittant and seems to become really aparent when going up a hill. Also, I'm getting gas returned back into the tank not in use, which I'd also read about as being an indicator of a problem with one or both of the in-tank fuel pumps.

I'm sorry this post is so long, but I have to get this off my chest and hopefully get my couple questions answered by someone who's knowlegable of the 96 f-150.

Thanks in advance,
IndependenceJohn

Don't know how long they will last on a '96, but I have a '90 with about 170k on it and never had any problems other than a relay go bad. I hope I'm not bringing any bad luck on myself. Don't know the answer to the 2 nd part of your question, but will do a little looking around and see what I can find.

Just went to Advance and Autozone's web site and looked for a fuel pump that would fit my truck since I don't know specifics of yours. Advance had several, with photos, $135 and $173. Looks like pump only, but reads like pump and tank. It was in stock at several stores here. You might want to go by and look at one. Autozone had two, don't remember price, looked like pump only. Couldn't tell if they were in stock or not.

Thanks Guzzler96! I just checked out Autozone's site and it appeared quite a bit different than the two or 3 parts sites I checked out. $129.99/ea. on the ones for my truck.
The fuel filter on mine hadn't been changed in...... well, way too many miles, so that could explain the bug I've got going on.
A buddy of mine with a '95 was sayin the bug might be the throttle position sensor. The hesitance is intermittant and if I pump the gas peddal a time or two it takes off and runs good for a bit then it starts again. I'm beginning to wonder if it's only the check valve on my pump not functioning properly and that sensor. If the fuel pump was hammered wouldn't the rough running be constant? I might just have to find someone with one of them code readers! Thanks again for the info.

I would probably suggest two things. Haynes publishes an Emissions Techbook, # 10210 (I think ), available at Advanced Auto for about $16 that I think discusses how to check the TPS. I also think that there has been some discussion in some threads on rough idle that tells you how to check it.
I have the Haynes book. I will check it tonight. The posted threads have been this week I think. You could check the fuel pressure.
In the Chilton and Haynes manuals I believe they tell you how to jumper a connection to read codes which makes your MIL ( Malfunction Indicator Light) commonly called Check Engine Light blink. Also, Autozone will read them, but they will probably try to tell you they can't read them unless the MIL is on all the time. I don't think that is quite accurate. I have an Autoxray EZScan 6000 and I can read codes whether the light is on constant or not. One problem with reading the MIL is you have to pay close attention to the blinks and try to distinguish the separator codes.

Yeah, I'd read the posts regarding how to jumper a connection to read codes.... the bummer is my MIL is no longer working. It doesn't even flash when I turn the ignition on anymore. That's why I was sayin I needed to find someone with a reader. I'll try out Autozone and see if they won't pull the codes for me....... it seems that would be mutually beneficial..... they pull codes, I buy parts!
