hello..2004 xlt, 5.4, it does'nt seem that the payload is that great on this suv. the payload is under 1600 lbs, it just seems to me that if you had eight grown men w/out cargo you may already exceed the listed rating....am I missing something?
I dont claim to be a Ford engineer, but it's probably just a number they place on their specs to comply with Safety regulations on how much weight you should have in your vehicle before it becomes unsafe. Many times we load our vehicles down with more cargo than they should "Safely" carry and things go okay, which makes this number seem stupid.
It doesnt necessarily mean that is the ONLY amount of weight you can place in the vehicle...its just a number.
Maybe we could get the help of the other members here.
The GVW of 7300 - Curb weight of 5671 = payload of 1629 lbs (on EB 4x4 5.4)
Depending on your state DOT guidelines your vehicle can't exceed the GVW.
Say an average weight of 180 lbs for a full size adult x 8 is 1440 lbs. With around 20 cubic feet of space behind the third row seat with about 160 lbs of gear to equal 1600 lbs. Or 5 adults at 180 lbs for 900 lbs with room for 700 lbs of gear in the back.
The 1998 had a 1875 lb payload
The 2000 had a 1855 lb payload
