I currently own a 1985 e-350 28' motorhome with a 460. It gets on a good day about 8 mpg Canadian gallons. I want to move up to a PSD and am looking to pull a 22-24' conventional trailer. What should I be looking for as in tranny ect. Is a auto really better for towing as compared to a standard? I am looking towards the 350 single not a dual rear axel. Is there anything I should be looking for, and what options should I be looking at. Is it advisable to put an automatic start on a diesel as I have one on my current truck and it is great for the winters up here.

As for a PSD they are great motors, but the only trans are available is a standard 5 speed, or an automatic overdrive. The auto is a problem trans, and has problems under heavy loads. Though you can get a different module from ford to boost the line presure, I would still prefer standard to auto overdrive.
Now I owe a 1987 F250 Supercab with a 6.9 Motor and installed an ATS turbo with exhaust. This truck has plenty of power and only has a C6 auto trans. This is a non overdrive unit that is almost bullet proof. Considering the cost of a new unit, I prefer to stay with mine. I get loaded about 12 mpg.
