I put michelin ltx 285\75-16 load D tires on a while back
they say 65lb. on the tire
but the tires really bow out and when I load weight in the back the tires really bow out alot
I know a load D tire was not a good idea--but you cant get a 285\75 tire in load E
but I already got the tires and there on --can I put more air pressure in these? will this help
btw-I emailed michelin and they just replied that the spec sheet says 65lbs pressure for maximum weight load
i have 285/75-16 bfg at's and they are load range D as well, max pressure is also 65psi, when i put my camper on my truck(2500#) the tires do bow out a bit. as far as comparing the 265/75-16 E-range to the 285/75-16 D-range. they both have about the same max load (within 100#)
Josh if you put a load on and over inflate the tires you are in for big trouble when they blow out at speed. Load rang D is OK for no load cruising and up to the max weight and PSI rating but, if you are gonna use the truck for hauling any serious weight you need the right tires...
This assumed you have a SuperDuty Ford.
I had a front side wall failure (not due to inflation, tire defect) at 75mph, empty, and the truck was a real bear to keep straight and get over to the side. Hate to even think about it with a load on!
it is a superduty - I put between 4-5 k lbs. in it each morning
I saw that the max weight load on these 285 tires were about 3300 lbs.
which was identical to that of the load E tires--so I figured all would be well when I got them---but- I guess there is a big difference in the side wall consturction and that makes the difference
If the Michelin tires you had installed are LTX M/S LT285/75/R16D's they are load range "D" tires rated at 3305 pounds at 65 PSI. You shouldn't have any problems.
Josh-
What size rims are you running? If it's the OEM 16x7s, they will really amplify the "bulge". Most 285 series tires are supposed to be on 8" rims. Now, for loading 4-5k lbs in the back of your truck, you are WAY overloaded! Be careful!
yes the tires are on stock rims-16x7
the tire dealer said it would be fine-they put that size on lots on SD's
I had to have the springs beefed in the truck to carry that much weight
but Ive always done it with out trouble--and its for work
its just with the weight in the truck the side walls really seem to give out
while driving highway\cornering etc....
I guess Im just getting a good education on tires now
I hope this thread will help advise some one else in a similar situation
about tires
btw--Im ordering a new truck this year--and Ill keep load E tires on her
