I finally got a few things ordered for my truck now. A Gibson cat back and a MAC cold air intake. Next I was wandering about a chip or programmer. The Diablo Delta looks pretty nice, but I would rather go with a programmer than a chip. Right now I'm looking at the Hypertech generation III programer. Anybody have and experience with this or know of a better route to take? BTW, I'll be using it on a 98 Mazda 4.0 4x4, which shouldn't make any difference (at least I hope). Also, what about a Comp Cam?
I've removed the link. This site is supported by sponsoring vendors and I don't allow programmer links here.
I guess its a new product. Hypertech must be hurting from the success of Superchips/Diablo right now for them to go after the Ranger/Mazda niche because its a small market.
Anyway, verify it will work with your Mazda first --- not all of them have the same PCM codes as the Rangers. Also, be aware that Hypertech tunes at WOT (about 80%+ throttle) only. The PCM code is on the passenger side door frame, hinge side.
I'll probably end up letting that be the last thing I get performance wise for my truck. That dose pretty much suck having to be WOT to take advantage of the product. I'm in no hurry, so who know's what will be out by the time I'm ready to make the final decision. Thank for the advise.
I know you want the programmer, but you will not regret going with a diablo chip. The power is there at any RPM or throttle position, making all around driveability much better. You can have it set up pretty much however you want it. What do you want out of the programmer instead of a chip. Also, if you go with a compcam, chances are the hypertech will not be able to offer the tuning possibilities that diablo could for a different cam. With diablo, you should be able to get a custom tune to make the most possible power out of a cam, Hypertech is too generic of a tune.
Thanks for all the info. I've decided to hold off on purchasing a chip until I'm pretty much through modifying my truck. Yesterday I put the MAC cold air intake on, BUT the pipe didn't match up well at all. So, I just used the stock pipe. I'm going to put some heat shield insulation around it this weekend to make up for it. So far all I've really noticed about it is lowered RPM's at higher speeds, which is nice for the gas mileage. The Gibson SS 2.5" cat back is supposed to be here today, so we'll see how that works out. The guy's at jamesduff.com told me headers for a 97 ranger should work fine with my truck, but I'm a little iffy now since the intake didn't match up right. Guess that's just a gamble I might have to take since I have a Mazda.
