Did Ford use FI carbs in there early FI engines, I know dodge used them around late 80s early 90s. Also would replaceing a standard crab w/ FI be a bolt on install?
I believe there was use of a TBI or throttle body injection carb on the Fords. If you want to upgrade to FI, there are several aftermarket companies that are now getting pretty good at offering the full kits. Check out some of the speed shops (Jegs/Summit), they have them ready to go.
Ford had a throttle body on the mid-80s 302's and such, as for an upgrade, the Holley Pro-jection is a nice kit that uses a 4bbl style throttle body. They also have a MPI style one that comes with an intake for the 302 and 351 (I think) as well as a universal one that you can use on any engine by adding injector bosses to the manifold. Cost on them run from about $1000 up for the kits.
Ford did use those, called it "Central Fuel Injection" or CFI. The only advantage to the systems is that you *could* replace the TBI unit on the trail with a carb and be able to drive out, but you'd also have to replace the dizzy as well. It does have spark control and some rudimentary diagnostic capability.
The wiring is almost exactly the same as replacing the intake and all with the sequential injection from an '89-93 Mustang, without the benifit of the EEC diagnostics.
For close to the same amount of money you can get a good used MAF SEFI setup and put that on your engine, or if your engine isn't all that strong, then swap in a 5.0 or 5.8.
