Emmission light reset?

I have a 86 F150 and the emission light stays on. A guy told me after so many miles it comes on automatically and can be reset. If so how and where? The truck runs great with no problems.

To completely reset the ECM:

1) Disconnect the negative battery cable
2) Turn the headlight switch on
3) Wait 10 minutes
4) Turn the switch off
5) Reconnect the battery cable

That resets it, and drains the capacitors (as mentioned).

After resetting the ECM, you need to relearn the ECM:

1) Start the engine, and allow it to idle for 1 minute.
2) Shut it off, and wait 10 seconds.
3) Start the engine, and turn on the headlights on high, and your a/c, with the fan on high, and let it idle for 1 minute.
4) Turn all the accessories off, and turn the engine off, and wait 10 seconds.
5) Start the engine, and make it idle @ 2000 rpm for 1 minute.
6) Shut it off, and wait 10 seconds.
7) Start the engine, and turn on the headlights on high, and your a/c, with the fan on high, and make it idle @ 2000 rpm for 1 minute.
8) Turn all the accessories off, and turn the engine off, and wait 10 seconds.

This is the best way to relearn the ECM, but you should take a 10 minute test drive afterwards to make sure all is well.

1985-87 LIGHT DUTY TRUCKS Control unit for maintenance reminder light is located under dash, near steering column or behind glove box. Some models use non resettable control unit. Replace it with a resettable type.

1) To reset SRI, turn ignition off. Remove tape over reset hole in timer. Lightly push a small phillips screwdriver into hole in timer unit marked RESET. With light pressure on screwdriver, turn ignition switch to RUN position.

2) Light should stay on while screwdriver is pressed down. Hold screwdriver down for approximately 5 seconds. Remove screwdriver. Light should go out in 2-5 seconds. If light does not go out , repeat steps 1) and 2).

3) Cycle ignition from off to run position. Light should glow for 2-5 seconds. This verifies proper reset of maintenance reminder light..
