I know this is probably the wrong site to post this but does anyone know what the crown vic's interceptor engine has that is different to give it so much more power. I have a 97 f150 w/ the 4.6 V8 and I would like to make the engine equal to the interceptor.

There is nothing on a P71 that gives it more power. The only differance between a P71 and my Grand Marquis is that the P71 doesn't have an electronic rev limit. About the only differance between a 1997 pickup 4.6 and a 1997 CV 4.6 is the intake - the pickup's is kind of a "medium rise intake" and the CV has a "low rise" intake due to the lower hood line. A 1997 single exhaust p71 has about 190 hp and a dual exhaust about 210 hp. The 1997 F150 has either a 200 or a 220 hp engine.
You need to re-flash the computer, with something like a power programmer. It doesn't remove the rev limiter, though, I believe it just raises the max rpms a bit. The big change is the elimination of the electronic nanny that pulls the plug at anywhere between 90-105 MPH. Otherwise, you will need to seek out a custom programmer.
go to motorhaven who just happen to be sponsor here on FTE and gives discount's to FTE'ers. also scroll down to the chips forum and ask there too and maybe ken the owner of FTE will help you out....
Not sure if it applies to Grand Marquis, but the Marauder joke was speed limited to under 120 because of drivetrain vibrations. So I would expect the GM to have similar problems at high speed.
i had a 94 P71 before i got my B3000. the engine is the same. just have true duals ( 2" ) firmer tranny shifts, better gears for high speed, and silicone hoses. thats all.
they are fun cars... but the novelty wore off after about a month of people slong down in front of me on the highway.
It's actually not a rev limiter but a speed limiter. And it strts cutting off cylinders in the engine at 135. I don't know the details just that that's how and when it works.
the 4.6L pi (all PIs)motor is a doch with a chip and exhaust.
The "Police Intercepter" package includes a heavier alternator, slightly heavier rotors, cheaper interior options (vinyl back seat, floor ect), balanced drive shaft and the rev limiter(or speed limiter) is shut off. The dohc engine isn't an option on any panther platform except the Mercury Marauder - any one that tells you differant needs to pull his head out. On the 1997 and earlier P71s dual exhaust wasn't standard either. The current 4.6 available in the panthers cranks out an anemic 239 hp, lot of V6s out there can whip its tail flat out but the sturdiness and weight of the body on frame construction make it a good (not great) police cruiser. The garden variety grannie mobile Marquis can run down a "PI" on a good day.

The new PIs are getting the v10 motor though; some places already have them.
Thus far the only ones with V10s are a few experimental units running on liquid propane. That version is about on par with the standard 4.6L in terms of hp. There where rumors abounding last fall that the CHP in Kalifornia had "special ordered" some V10s but they never surfaced. If Ford would drop the 3 valve 5.4 in it they'd have a something.
