Question squealing drivetrain?

You experts may regret me finding this forum!

Seems I have a relatively low squeal that sounds off at any speed over 10-15mph. It doesn't seem to change pitch or volume. I turned the rear wheels by hand and couldn't replicate the sound (thinking rear brakes.) Can I safely lift the rearend and engage the drivetrain to investigate some more? possibly something in the transfer case? It seems odd that it is so consistent, but again it's hard to listen and location while driving.

('99 XLT 4x4/4.0 ..86K)

thanks for any input,
mud

Well, I have a 00 4x4 B4000 70,000kms, and it too has a sueql, unrelated to speed / brakes.

It sounds pretty much the same as what you have, except mine seems to come from the front.

I posted the same question as this a while back, and a someone replied with a TSB stating it was the "half-shaft excluder seals" and they rub sometimes. Not a necessary change if you can put up with the noise.
Look about 2 weeks back for it.

Not supposed to apply to 99's (like yours) or 00's built before November but mine still does it unless thee is something else wrong and I dont know.

Try and figure it out. Im not sure that this excluder seal thing is what makes the sound. Keep up informed. I know there are more peope on here who have the same problem.
p.

I forgot to add, try getting it up to speed, and shifting to neutral. then turning off your truck. I still get the same sound. Do you?

update

...so the squeal is still present coasting in neutral with the engine off.

With the help of a friend I also put the rear end on jacks and engaged the tranny and could not reproduce the noise. I guess it must be further forward than I thought.

I'm stumped

You seem much more mechanicly inclined than I am, have you tried lubricating these "half shaft excluder seals"? There are shown inthe Haynes manual but I dont have jacks, and havent gotten around to really examining under there.I did spray some WD-40 around the area. It seemed to help for about a day but Ive only done it once. Silicon grease would likely work better I assume.

Let me know if you find any solutions.
