my serfice engine light just came on in my '99 Expedition. talking to a friend, he said there may be a way that i can check the faults causing the light to come on w/o having to take it to the service shop first. e.g. in his car there is a sequence of pushing the gas pedal 5 times, turning the key, etc. and at the end of the sequence the engine light blinks a certain number of times. the number of times that light blinks respresents a specific problem. does anyone know how to do this or if the capability exists on my SUV?
fyi...i was losing power as i was accelerating and that is when my light started flashing, then went to a steady on state.
If you go to Autozone, they will let you use an OBD-II code reader to read the code, in hopes that you will buy the parts from them.
I have had this done by them twice, both times it diagnosed my problem. I ended up buying the code reader ($150 at Autozone) as it is a great tool to have. It works with all vehicles from 1996 on, so you can use it on other cars as well.
PS- I don't believe the Expy has any such pattern. If I am wrong, someone out there let me know...I guess I could check my Chilton's manual or ford manual later......
Your friend's vehicle is probably pre-1996 (OBD-I). My guess is that Auto Zone will read a P0303(Misfire Cylinder 3) or P0304 (Misfire Cylinder 4). You might need to replace the coil pack (COP) on that cylinder ($41.95+tax at AZ). Also, check the hose clamps against the firewall over cylinder 4 (pass. side) to make sure that they are tight.
