I've got a problem. I have an 87 F150 4 speed with the 4.9 in it. The problem is that this thing is eating starter motors. I have put 3 of them in it in four years and the latest one is about 6 months old and is starting to go. I can tell this because I parked on a steep hill and you could hear it rattling off the flywheel. I had a mechanic friend of mine who owns a garage put this last one in and when I asked him how the flywheel looked he said everything looked okay. I can't believe the springs in these things are so weak they keep breaking. BTW I put a heavy duty one in and it lasted about 18 months before it crapped out. The others were just standard starters. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.
Try new battery cables - both positive and negative - the negative cable is most often the culprit - it can go bad in side the cable and still look good. replace both negative cables if it's a two piece.
Low voltage at the starter causes higher current in the starter motor windings and heat that will burn up the starter.

FYI...the later year starters for the 300 turn at higher speed, faster than my original 83.
The Autozone guy tipped me off. Instead of a typical cranking, the new one whines!!!
Thanks for the help guys, I'll give it a try and see. Although I don't really understand why this would cause the spring to go? I could see it burning it out but it starts the vehicle fine it just doesn't seem to pop the bendix back. Hey SRERCRCR I wish it was just whining I think it would be alot better than the rattling I'm getting now.
