hey guys, I am curious on what the symptoms of a turbo going out would be (00 PSD W/ auto). I am concerned because when the tranny shifts to overdrive, during the woosh sound the turbo starts to flutter. Now it does this when i get on it, or when it is under load and or going up small inclines. Any info would be appreciated as i know I come to the right place. Thanks!
Remove the intake, and check to see if the turbo spins freely, and whether or not you've got any endplay. What you're describing sounds as though things might be getting a little worn in there. Have your gauges indicated any change in your boost readings?

Classic turbo surge/stall symptoms. Have you recently upgraded your intake, exhaust or added a chip, or perhaps did you notice the symptoms while towing heavy?
The flutter you are hearing is not good for the turbo, but it's not necessarily indicative of it failing either. Check out some of the past threads on surge/stall, or look for threads with the search terms "wicked wheel" or "ATS housing" as those two items are the cure for the common surge.
I did just install an AFE system (stage 1 ) and a four bank Bully dog chip. I could barely hear it before the mods were installed and now with the AFE it is just more pronounced. I will also check out the the play in the turbo.
In addition to the freeplay check you can also check the axial clearance by pressing in and then pulling out on the wheel while you are rotating it. If either wheel contacts the housing the turbo bearings (which are actually just oil control bushings) are bad. All turbo's will have some radial endplay, but it shouldn't be more than 1 or 2 thousandths.
