What Grit # Do I Use?

My F1 Has Alot Of Old Body Work And Surface Rust Through Out. What Grit # Paper Do I Use For This? Also, I've Been Using A Da But It Seems That My Compressor Is Too Small, Only 2 Hp. I Also Have An Electric Sander, Is This Ok To Use? Thanks In Advance For Your Replies.

First off, Welcome to FTE.

Since you have Rust, I'm assuming you're planning to take things down to the metal. Since you're planning on sanding, rather than sandblasting, I'd start out with an 80 grit, and Yes, you can use an Electric Sander. I've used my Electric Orbital Palm Sander for much of my bodywork. Once you have it to the metal, tap out whatever dents you can, treat the bare metal with a rust inhibitor, primer with an expoxy, do your filler work, then primer again. Should turn out fine as long as you have patience.

Good luck and if this doesn't answer your questions, please feel free to ask more - just be more specific.

Also, we always like to be kept updated on how things are going. Creating a gallery would be a good touch.

Hi Tommy -

Click on the "User CP" at the top of any page. This takes you to your Control Panel. In there, on the left you should see "Settings & Options" and about five choices down is one for your Gallery (may say Create Gallery, mine says Edit Gallery). Click on that and follow the prompts. It's very user friendly.

Thanks for the reply,I was using #80 but it seems like the #80 was'nt enough. It was taking a very long time to get to the metal.

#36 grit for tough rust. I've done a lot of body work in the last year and my next door neighbor and friend has been a body man for 27 years as well as being the head guy where he works and does 2-3 side jobs a week. He's taught me a ton of stuff in the last 6 years.

I have a 9 inch electric grinder/buffer tool that I used #25 grit wheels on for the really tough stuff and my angle grinder for wiping out the heavy rusted areas as well as a cutoff wheel for cutting out the panels.

One thing to remember: There is always more rust hiding around the rust spot you thought was just 2 inches. Try 4-5 inches! Rust is a hideous cancer if you live in the rust belt like me.

? what goes first

Thanks Carlene for the reply and tips,I was able to add some pics on my gallery. I been using the electric sander and it works great,is only a 5" inch but it will do for now. my next question is, do I sand the hole truck before I prime or should I do it by sections, and ? do I prime before using the body filler.Thtanks.

Yes, epoxy prime before using the filler.

Filler work on bare metal is done all the time but by using epoxy primer, you seal in any micro-rust and seal out any water. PPG currently recommends epoxy primer before the filler work and then a coat of epoxy over the filler.

As far as doing the work by sections, that depends on how long it takes you to strip the vehicle. If it's going to take you more than 2-3 days to do the sanding, then I would prime as you went.

Well.....

It will be only a matter of time until it rusts out again.

Clean it up as best of possible and apply a rust converter (Rust Mort, Metal Ready, & etc.). That won't stop the rusting process but should slow it down some.

Since normal filler isn't waterproof, after applying your fiberglass patch, do the majority of your filler work with fiberglass-based filler (Kitty Hair & etc.). Apply epoxy primer and finish with your normal filler and polyester filler.
