does anyone know how to increase performance on the 99 psd. I have heard of air intake upgrades etc...also anyone know of any good magazines on diesel trucks?
If your Diesel is a 99 1/2 you can use Airaid's new intake system that add 12hp and 15ft/lb to the rear wheels. There are also a few different chip programs you can get for your truck. Superchips base PSD chip will get you another 50hp and 100ft/lb and the "hot" chip from them will give you another 70hp and 120 ft/lb and they both will give you another 2-3 mpg. But, one thing to think about if you are towing with your vehicle and you use a chip, is the need to open up your exhaust a bit. When you add a chip to you PSD it increases your exhaust temp.... so you in turn need to get you exhaust out quicker. At my shop I offer my customers a few different options.. either run a straight pipe where the muffler is(a bit loud but cheap), a straight through muffler), or a custom 4" exhaust including 4" down pipe. Hope this helps to give you a few ideas.

There is a very interesting article in Hypermax's web site on an upgrade. They used upgraded nozzles, exhaust components, and a new module. www.cl.ais.net/hypermax
There is no question that increasing the intake and exhaust flows into your engine can help, but only to a point. If you wish to gain larger power increases, the software can be reflashed, or a performance chip added. By doing this you can change the injection timing, length, and so on. But even this has limits. An engine of the Powerstroke's size (7.3 liters) is capable of much more power than Ford wants to deal with. For example, Cat makes a 7.2 liter that can be rated anywhere from 180 to 450HP. The higher horsepower model has more aggressive software, as well as different injectors, exhaust manifolds, turbo charger, pistons, valve springs, aftercooling, and so on. They also don't last very long. So, how much power do you need, and how much money do you want to spend?
