I have a 1988 F350 crew cab dually and the problem I'm having is in the fuel area. I will be draining the rear tank this week thinking it may have water in it. The problem is that when I switch to the rear tank the truck will run for a very short time and them shut off. It will not restart right away. The other problem is that on either tank the dash gauge is constintly reading full ( gauge is pegged to the right ). Please send any suggestions that you fell will help this problem as I am new to deisel trucks.
Also if anyone lives in the Allentown, Bethlehem, or Easton Area that knows anything about working on deisel powered trucks please let me know as I could really use some help with this one.
You have one of several problems, the first being that the fuel selector valve is bad, and not allowing fuel to go through it when you switch to the other tank. The other problem may be that the pickup tube is broken in the tank, or a leak in the fuel line prior togeting to the selector valve. If you have a leak it is easier to pull air than fuel up and you will run out of fuel.
As for the gauge, to test switch over the tank, unplug the wire harness on top of the fuel tank, if the problem is in the tank, the guage should go to the empty side. If it stays full your problem is in the selector valve. If the gauge goes to empty, after you unplug the harness your problem is in the sending unit in the tank.
