The engine in my 92 ranger(2.3Litre) has developed a severe knock after the engine was overreved. I think the timing belt/chain has broken or jumped a notch. Any suggestion as to what my next step is? Will the 2.3 litre engine in a 91 ranger be interchangeable with the 92 chasiss? Will the motor mounts and wiring harness connections be the same? Any other alternatives?
Thanks for your help.
If the belt broken the engine won't run. Jumping a notch may let it run very poorly or not at all. Is the engine still running? Before you start swapping engines, lets make sure it isn't something easier to do, unless you just want the other engine.
My first reaction would be a rod bearing; can you be more specific about the knock and where it's comming from and under what conditions? In general, a rod bearing makes the most noise when accelerating/decellerating.
The knock comes from the top side of the motor. I took a compression test , there was nothing there. Same goes for the oil pressure. I will be removing the head tonight so any quick suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Sounds like the timing belt. If there is no compression, you could be banging valves onto the pistons because some of the valves will still be open when the piston hits TDC. Don't crank it any more until the head is off.
Does it still seem to run the same, but with the knock, or is it also running badly? What's the oil pressure look like, is it the same as it has been, or worse? Or do you just have an idiot light, no gauge? If so, is the light flickering at idle, and wasn't before? Is the knock constant, you can hear it the instant you start up? I'm thinking rod bearing if bad oil pressure, or cracked piston skirt if good oil pressure. -TD
