Removing Bed To Replace Pump- Method Of Rustproofing Frame?
Well, this will be the second time in a year that I'll be replacing the fuel pump on my 94 2.3l (240,000 miles on it). The original fuel pump went last year and I dropped the tank to replace it. I didn't have much fun doing that and so this time I plan to remove the bed as I hear it's easier. The pump I replaced a year ago wasn't bad, but dirt had sat in the plastic collar on the top of the tank and worked it's way into the harness. Luckily it only ate away the contacts on the pump's side of the connection and not the truck's harness side. So, I replaced the pump/sending unit and all was "well". A few days ago the truck started doing the same thing (not starting some times) and, while I still have to diagnose it to be sure, I'm pretty sure the stupid pump is bad again- more than likely it's the wiring harness connection being contaminated by dirt again. This time around I plan to do something about that plastic collar on top of the tank. It will hold dirt a good inch or so deep in it, which isn't good for an electric harness to be sitting in. I'll probably cut some wide gaps in the plastic collar which will allow dirt and water to more easily flow out (the existing ones are too small). Anyway, while I have the bed off I'd also like to sand down some stuff on the frame and rust proof it somehow. The truck gets sprayed each year at Ziebart and for the most part looks great underneath, but I noticed some of the mounts on the frame are getting a bit rusty. I hear this is a problem with early 90s Rangers. Otherwise I couldn't be more happy with the rust resistance of these trucks thanks to the galvanized steel they used on most of the lower metal. I don't have access to a sand blaster and so I'd probably be using a drill with something on it (wire brush?) to get most of the rust off. My question is what to use to remove it and what to use to protect the metal from further rusting? Extend? Rustoleum With Zinc? Etc...Thanks in advance.
