Dash Pad's Front Chrome Strip

Looking for some ideas to refurb the leading (windshield) edge of the dash pad in my '66 custom cab. The dash pad is in fine shape with no cracks or bites, but it has shrunk back from the leading edge maybe 1/2", especially in the center. This has pulled out of alignment the snap-clip holes thru the vinyl so they no longer match up with the holes in the metal below. And, the vinyl is unglued from the metal below for an inch or so back from the edge, all the way across. Now if I reinstall the chrome trim strip with its metal clips, new snap-clip holes would have to be put through the vinyl, and in some areas the vinyl is short of the underlying holes. Also, the chrome strip is not wide enough to both catch the edge of the vinyl and cover the gap left by the shrunken vinyl. To me, an obvious answer is some kind of flexible molding that will conform to the windshield/dash curve, and be installed in a removable way. I'm also wondering if the chrome strip could serve as a template to make a wider hardwood replacement to attach with screws. Forum searches didn't turn up any solutions, but it's hard to believe this is plowing new ground. It would be nice to tackle this while I've got the instrument panel out to install a voltmeter. Ain't it odd how one thing leads to another?
