Well I finally determined that I have a 1987 5.0 in my 74 Bronco thanks to your help! Latest delemia is pulleys and balancer. I installed an aluminum radiator and high volume water pump recently. Since the engine had a water pump with a driver's side outlet and the lower hose partially pinched and rubbing between the frame and the oil pan, I decided to convert it to the standard Bronco style pump. Well, now my pulleys won't line up. (And they are now too large, 8" OD lower, 7" OD upper) Simple solution is purchase used Bronco pulleys? Not, my lower pulley is 4 bolt where the standard Bronoco lower pulley/Harmonic balancer is 3 bolt. I pulled the harmonic balancer and the rubber is somewhat dry rotted, bringing me to my question. Can I install a standard 3 bolt harmonic balancer on this engine and utilize the standard pulleys or is it more complicated than that? How serious is the condition of a harmonic balancer to the life of an engine? Can I utilize a 3 bolt pulley and redrill it to match my harmonic balancer?
I would appreciate any help. What I thought would be a project completed in a weekend has me out of commision for a while.
Try calling Bronco Graveyard or check it out online. They have 3 & 4 bolt balancers w/ pulley kits. http://broncograveyard.com/products/cat/13/9 I think this is the correct page. They are pretty helpful over the phone.
Some early mustang specialists sell balancers with the proper bolt pattern and changeable balance weights - 302's changed balance in 81 I think but the early bronco and mustangs (up to 69) had a shorter water pump/balancer/pulley setup- so even if you got the entire setup from a donor vehicle it wouldnt be balanced correctly. There is no factory balancer for your particular mix that I can think of.
The 5.0 has an out of balance of 51 oz. uniqe to the 5.0. does not interchange with a 28 oz balancer.
Re drilling a pully to bolt up to your balancer is your best bet.
If you have a 50 oz balance, isn't it a 1/2 inch thicker than the 28 oz? I have a 80 and newer 5.0 with 50 oz balancer and everyone I have talked to says I can't use my orig pulleys I need to go to a Serp. drive system.
