Bought the BII used and jumpered the ac switch and got the compressor to run and it sounds ok. Is there a product i can buy to recharge the system myself. This is one of the things ive never done on a vehicle. Another question is that the fluid in the resevior for the clutch is black. Do i just drain and refill till its clean. Have already been driving it and it seems fine.

These kits are a good quick fix. Me personally, I would stay clear away from these (wal-mart, k-mart,etc..)kits. The reason is you don't know what is in these cans. I've seen them come with freon,dye,and sealant. This spells distatser in the long term. They can cause more harm than good. There is no substitution for a good shop doing it up for you. You need pure, uncontaminated freon with no moisture at the proper charge to get your A/C running. Using these A/C machines, the tech can tell if there are any leaks, blockages, etc..
With these cans, you don't know what is going in and what is going on inside the A/C system.
Yes converting to R-134 is the best thing you can do. Ditch the R-12.
