Hi all,
I placed the sensor in the exhaust manifold and was getting ready to run the wires through the firewall and I noticed that my kit came with a 6' High Temp Leadwire. Is this wire for use in the event the wires from the sensor can't reach the amplifier wires ?? Is this wire a must use ??
I have round electrical connectors with nylon locknuts on both ends of the amplifier and the sensor in the exhaust manifold.
Can I snip a set of those wires and crimp the appropriate connectors to make this work ??
You cannot alter the length of these wires in anyway or the gauge will not read properly. If you need a shorter wire you must buy it from the manufacture of your gauge (the same holds true if you need a longer wire).
You also cannot solder on these wire or it will ruin the sensor calibration.

Hope this helps
That is correct , you must not in any way cut or modify the length of the cable that is supplied with your gauge as it has been calibrated to that certain gauge. You can simply loop it and put a tywrap on it under the dash that is what i did with mine , but make sure you dont kink the wire or place the tywraps too tight . hope this helps
I haven't ordered my guages yet, but I see Motorhaven lists 2 different lengths of thermocouple lead wires. One is 6' and the other is 10'. What length do you need to order to install the pyrometer pre-turbo to a pillar guage? Sounds like 6' is plenty.

6' isnt long enough to go from the intake to the dash 4 a boost gauge, so i would go the extra. u can always bunch up the extra.
TwinTritons,
The 6' length for the lead wire for the thermocouple is plenty. I had to coil quite a bit of the extra wire down around the chassis.
On a separate note...I started up the engine to test the pyro gauge and it didnt' move off of 100 deg F. I noticed the needle jumped a little when I cranked the engine then returned to its rest pretty abruptly. It got too late to troubleshoot, I'll have to check it out tomorrow.
I'm pretty positive that I wired up everything correctly. The only concern that I would have is the short piece of wire coming from the thermocouple got twisted a bit when I was coiling up the extra wire but not to the point where It was kinked.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what to try when I troubleshoot ???
Make sure the connections, the ones with the nylon nuts, are not grounding out on something. You should wrap them up tight with electrical tape if you haven't done so.
you can use an ohm meter to check the resistance from the probe behind the gauge , record it then crank the truck and wait like 2 min, then read what is show, their whould be a differec in ohms from each other , i cant give you the exact numbers as i never tested mine , but that will let you know it it is a bad thermocuple.
Also as fredsf250td said check for short. you can do this with your ohm meter if you check and you are read very low like less then 2 ohms that would not be good.
hope this helps and if anyone can add or clarify please do as I am not an expert on trucks these are just suggestions to help out
