Question fuel quantity reads empty

What do I need to replace if the fuel quantity reads empty on my 1994 Ford Ranger 4.0 liter automatic 4X4. The tank is full. When the ignition switch is off, the guage floats between empty and half. When the ignition switch is on, it reads a steady "E".

Provided the wiring is ok, I'd suspect that the float in the gas tank has failed (saturated with gas and sunk to the bottom of the tank).

Hmm...

Not much of a "new car" expert, but on my old Chev., a bad gauge reading could be from a bad ground from the sending unit. Maybe see if there's a ground wire coming from the tank sending unit that attaches to the body or frame of the truck and make sure it's properly grounded?

Just trying to help.

Good luck!

Welcome to FTE!!

I agree with the float or sendor in the tank, pull the bed off its much easier. Also there is a link in the tech info thread at the top of the forum about this topic.
