New truck, bad carb. So I rebuilt it. Drives great now. Only problem is the accelerator pump leaked horribly. So I took it apart and noticed that the cover was concave, as if it had been over torqued. So I got some 400 grit emery cloth and ground that baby perfectly smooth. Oops. It still leaks, just not so bad.
Question: Was it supposed to be concave? The mating part looked awful flat, but I had a hard time getting my straight edge on it.
Other question: What about a fuel bowl leak. It could drip and look like the pump.
Final question: Since I may be totally hosed on this, where can I buy I fuel bowl for a 4180/4160/4150 cheap?
Did you replace the diaphram in the accelerator pump? they often get hard and crack over the years.
You could try snugging up the bowl bolts to see if it stops it.
I pulled the carb yet again and decided to replace the blue Holley gasket on the fuel bowl with the standard paper gasket even though I could clearly see the leak coming off of the pump.
Naturally, it worked.
The problem was initially TWO leaks in the same area. I fixed one (the pump) but the crummy gasket was leaking in the same place.
Go figure.
BTW, the fix on the pump was pretty slick. Using 400 grit and honing the cover exactly flat was a great fix.
