Fuel filter Replacement

After reading several posts on how to change the fuel filter I decided to bring the truck into the ford dealership because I figured it wouldn't cost much more to let them do it after pricing in the tool. One hour and $53Can. later it was finished. I crawled under the truck when I got home and and found that the metal clip on the feed side of the filter was missing, one of the clips on the return fuel line wasn't in the locked postion and the return line wasn't snapped into the fuel filter holder. Brought it back to ford and they told me the metals clips weren't need. Should have done it myself, sorry but just had to vent. P.S. they only have worked on my truck one other time because of a clunking sound in the front suspension (ford ended up torching the radius arm bushing, I replaced it myself) while under warranty.

You would think for the price they would at least do it right......especially at a dealership.

The clips are not that hard to put on.....

The tool was less than $5 at autozone though

It was the 5 piece set of round plastic slotted collars that slip onto the proper size fuel line and then you push the collar into the connector releasing the toothed spring, it was $17 canadian at CTC(canadian tire corp.) Ford has only touched my truck twice and they are two for two, thank god ford makes a very reliable truck. I have done all the other work, brakes, starter relay and the previously mentioned radius arm bushing thanks to the help of everyone on this great forum.

The one I picked up looks like a pair of pliers with a circle that forms up on each end when you squeeze them together. It works ok...but maybe the one you describe would work better.

I agree though. I do my own work for the same reasons. I just hate paying someone to do it wrong. Like they have no pride in their work.... especially on something simple..... <sigh>

Businesses these days spend more time trying to be your best friend and less time trying to do the job right, so much for progress. Reminds me of the gov't.

Question Ford fuel filter removal

How did the dealer get your filter out?...I've tried three times using the release tool and can't get mine to release from the line on the motor side of my '94 F-250 4WD,351W.Short of cutting off the armored cable end AND filter,I'm not sure if even the dealer can do any better. The feed side of the filter releases as intended, but not the motor side.I've tried penetrating oil,KB Blaster, motor oil,a NEW set of release tools...nothing is working for me.Any ideas? Thanks,Gary

I changed my fuel filter (95 F150) recently and that has to be one of the most stupid designs I've ever seen. I had to cut the connection on the filter and then spend a lot of time to get it apart. The connectors Ford uses are stupid, why not just use fittings like everyone else. There's a safety issue here in that you can't be sure the little claws have engaged so a fuel leak is a real possibility. Also you've got the whole underside of the truck, why stick the filter between the fuel tank and the frame. Do they use these stupid connectors so that only dealers would do it or what?

I wasn't there when they removed the fuel filter, so I can't help you. But you can do SEARCH in this particular forum and other people will have already posted what they have done to remove the filter. Go to the top of the page and click on the word SEARCH with the ARROW beside it. Type in the blank space "fuel filter removal" and click on the GO button. I'm sure there will be lots of information to be read. Good Luck!

I agree. What a stupid design. To get the tool to work you have to push the filter into the line to take any pressure off the fitting. Then you can work the darn thing. Whoever designed the whole thing must have been on drugs.

Talking Fuel filter replacement

Hey,HLADUN...I'm about out of fresh ideas on this one.I don't want to make any metal chips that would f__k up the fuel injectors. How'd you get the connector to give up the remaining piece of steel tubing from your old filter?Geeez..what a mess...Thanks,Gary

If I remember correctly, I cut the filter nipples with snips. I could then turn the flex lines down and pulled the nipples out of the connectors. Be careful not to damage the lines/connectors. I destroyed the little claws in the connectors, but new ones can be purchased (at dealer). There are o-rings in the connectors but I didn't replace mine. Give youself most of a day to do this. Once again...stupid, stupid design!

First time changing the fuel filter can be a booger! I know I went round and round with the one on mine....... 'til I got the cheap plastic Air Conditioning/Fuel Line Fitting Tool set at the parts store for $8, I think.... Once those tools were in my possession and I used the correct size one on the line, they slid right off the filter without any FURTHER problems. I really didn't dig the design either, since the ones on my truck didn't even slightly resemble the ones shown in the shop manual I have.

Good luck,
IndependenceJohn
