'97 psd stalling problems

Can any one help? I have a '97 f-250hd psd 4x4 automatic. My truck occasionaly stalls while decelerating at slower speeds. Also has momentarily cutout while under load climbing a grade. 1 more problem. All of a sudden when I hook up my trailer with electric brakes the engine dies every time I step on the brake. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot, or where to take it? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Check body ground conections. Also you may have a bad camshaft position sensor. But the best is to have it checked out.

I have seen this concern more than once. yes you
could have a bad cam position sensor but i think
it may be a trans. problem. service the tranny. a clogged tranny filter will stall the engine
at slow speeds while braking. sounds crazy but
ford has a tsb out on this and I have resolved
a few of these concerns that way. hope you solve it

Mine has been stalling when I manually shift from 1st gear back to drive at slow speeds and high RPMs.....it stalls out rather than dropping to 600 RMP. Is the tranny filter inside the tranny pan cover?

spiziali, I think your problem sounds like a bad CPS. Get a new Motorcraft (dark grey with purple o-ring). You should start there because they're inexpensive to replace. Just don't pay $200 at a dealership like they tried to get me to do.

Servicing the transmission is never a bad idea. That should be part of regular service, and if you haven't done that in a while, I would go ahead and do that too, if I were you.

Yeah, the filter's right there inside the pan. Make sure the old o-ring comes off with the old filter and doesn't get stuck up in that tube.

No Trans expert here , but it sounds like the TC is staying locked ...

My money says spiziali doesn't even own that truck anymore.

Powerstroked XLT, why are you starting out in 1st and then shifting into D? I would agree with Rick about the torque converter sounding like it's not unlocking, but perhaps if we knew more about what else was going on we might be able to offer more suggestions. Also, any chips or mods to your truck?

I posted problem a few weeks ago and didn't hear much, so I was poking around on some old post.....would be great to hear some suggestions.

When I have going down a steep grade at slow speeds (typically residential) and have the tranny manually shifted into first gear (1500 rpm range at 5-10 mph), reach the bottom and go to shift it into drive, the RPMs just dive and the truck basically shuts off and will re-start just fine. I can manually shift though all the gears fine, and if I leave it in first gear, come to a complete stop, then put it in drive it does not die. I cannt figure out why it basically turns off if I put it back in drive under that circumstance only......it seems to be related to the high RPM or exhaust back preasure?

Truck has a new CPS, 150k miles, turbo back exhaust (no cat) and has a chip.

Any ideas?.....

Oh, lol, I didn't see that this post was so ancient. It's like The Night of the Living Thread in here.

Edit: I was ten years old when this thread was started, lol.

I don't think your problem is back pressure related. Lots of compression in the diesel engine. I'd start experimenting and see how you can change it. Try accelerating a little before shifting. Try shifting into 2 for a bit then up to drive. Try shifting into Neutral first, then back into Drive. Remove the chip and see if that changes anything.

Check the purple wire with the pink stripe at the trans for any open spots that could be grounding that wire. That will lock the TC and kill the motor at the stop.
