Bout lost my load on the way home today. The whole ride I had to stear to the left really hard to get the truck to stay straight. Then when on 270 in Columbus it felt like the strearing box slipped a gear and at 65 the who truck just jearked to the right. Bout choked on my heart. Think the Stearing Gear box is bad, what do you think. Also how hard is it to replace this part?
It's not the steering box. No steering box is that bad.
Jack the truck up (preferably by the frame) and have someone wiggle the wheels while you look for the movement. Something that sounds that bad should be real easy to spot. If you can't find it, have someone move the steering wheel back and forth while looking for the problem.
If it is that bad , I don't recommend you drive it until you fix it it. Sounds very dangerous to me. There has to be a front end shop in your town that can tell you what is wrong with the truck and can do repairs for you. Good luck.
I just went throught this deal. Amongst other things (ball joints, radius arm bushings), the axle u-joints were completely shot. Replaced them, and it drives like new.
I agree with scootin. The u-joints can really give you some unexpected steering problems when they become frozen due to lack of lube. I have no idea on the cost to have this work done, with my budget I do all the work myself with the help of this forum. If you cannot identify the problem yourself, I would definitely have an alignment shop take a look at it and keep the driving to an absolute minimum until fixed.
