alternative to 2.9?
My friend and neighbor has an 88 Ranger with the 2.9. It's time to rebuild it or replace it. Any other motors that might bolt in fairly easily? 2.9's are pricey and rare in these parts. Thanks in advance. (oh yeah- 4x4, 5spd)

You can drop a 4.0 in,it will bolt to the motor mounts and the tranny.all you need to get out of the donor veh is the MAFsensor and the related wires and the ECU{conputer}More power. easy to find parts.
You can do a 302 swap but you will need more parts for that.JMO

grayranger4x4 is correct the 4.0 ford motor is the same block just redone for more power.i know i have a 1988 2.9 4x4 Bronco II and a 1994 4.0 ranger supercab 4x4 and at one point owned a 1989 2.9 4x4 supercab ranger but my engine was bellowing blue smoke and was on it's last leg already completly bored out so i traded it in on my dad birthday jeep but was thinking of putting in the 4.0 engine
