Sounds to me like the IAC. Is it throwing a code? Easy to swap out.

Just out of curiosity, what octane gas are you using and what does your manual recomend? I ask this because in 97 myself and two of my neighbors all bought F-150 supercabs (Mine:4.6, neighbor #1:4.6, #2: 5.4) each of my neighbors had the same symptoms you are describing. In the end (and after numerous trips to the dealer) it came down to the fact that they were burnning 89 octane or higher and Ford recomended 87. (I was burnning "the cheap stuff" from the start and never had a problem) Once they burned a tank of 87 they had no more problems. Good luck!
