Question 99 V10 in E350 chassis

Hi from a Newbie!

I have chance to buy a '99Chinook Class C motorhome with V10 with only 5300 (that's fifty three HUNDRED!) miles. Older couple (older than me) couldn't use it much due to health problems. I've browsed this Forum - found great info, but I'm still aprehensive because truck is out of warranty and 5 years old.

Should I expect problems with this engine? I've heard of Piston slap and a tendence to spit out spark plugs. Lots of postings on this at http://destinations.motorhome.com/sc...cfm?threadid=9

What experiences do you have? Am I about to buy a pack of trouble?

Depends on a lot of variables.

I would be less concerned if that motor had about 40-60K on it. Don't go all giddy about the low milage. That poor motor has been sitting for 4.5 to 5 years. Now if the owner can convince you that he started the motor at least once a month and got it up to operating temp that might be a good thing.

Even bettwer if he has proof of regular oil changes two or more times a year since new. See the problem is that used oil oxidises and forms acids that are not good for metal parts. Some additives and oil also absorb moisture. Bringing the fluids up to full operating temp frequently causes this water to boil out.

Bottom line is unless this coach and drive train are immaculate and very low cost... AND the owner serviced it as if it really had some normanl usage, walk away.

PS 5 year old tires are shot even with ONLY 5300 MILES ON THEM!

Guarentee the auto tranny fluid is factory original and has water in it also, same with brake fluid.

I bot mine with 40K, I do have piston slap, but have almost 95K on it now. Go look at the truck in the morning, before anyone has had a chance to start it and get it warm, you'll either hear piston slap or not. If you're worried about sparkplug blowout you can either have the plugs replaced right away, or live with the odds. Most V-10's don't blow plugs out, so you're safe. Of course, anything can and will happen at whatever time is most inconvenient, you know that already. Nothing used is a sure thing, but I would have no qualms about buying another Ford V-10, just my .2 cents worth, and that IS what they're worth, yuk yuk, Ken
