Charging & Noise problems
After reading your posts I myself now need help from you guys. I just bought a 1975 f100, 360, 3 spd auto, it is a little beat up but it is still great. after changing the oil, plugs, hoses, etc...... I started having electrical problems. I then replaced the battery, alternator and voltage regulator. After replacing these I noticed a high pitched whining sound that was coming from the alternator as far as I could tell. Since it was a refurbished alternator I asked the guys at the parts store and they said that it probably had bad bearings. I switched it out today and I am still getting that same high pitch whine. It only does this while the engine is idling..... at the slightest touch of the accelerator and increase in RPMs the noise goes away. I thought that there might not be enough tension on the alternator belt but the guys at the parts store said that was usually a symptom of the belt being too tight. I am sure that it isn't too tight. There is at least a half inch displacement when the belt is pushed or pulled on. While all of this was happening, on two occasions the battery did not have enough power to start the engine but it was usually fine.
Does anybody know what the hell is going on with this thing?
Thanks

I might suspect a bad regulator, it sounds like the alt. is charging as hard as it can, but the regulator isn't letting it. They often whine when this happens. Also, check the connections on the back of the alt. and regulator to make sure that all of the connections are good and clean.
well I did replace the regulator when I replaced the alternator......but perhaps I can try that again. I probably should have left the old one in. I replaced because the documents with the new (rebuilt) alternator recommended it.
Will running it with a bad regulator ruin the alternator?
