Follow the cooler lines back to where they go... On my old Chevy 454 dually I had one cooler for the tranny and one for the engine oil.
You can look up your VIN number and door sticker code info in the 'tech articles' section of this site (link in the upper right hand corner of page) and find out for sure what tranny and axle ratio/differential type you have.
If your auto trans is a 3 speed without overdrive, it will be a C6. I don't know if they were using the E4OD yet in 3/4-tons in '87. Your rear axle is likely a 10.25" Ford and could be full-float or semi-float, depending on the truck's GVWR and rear GAWR. Trucks over 8600 lbs GVWR should be full-float. Most had axle ratios of either 3.55 or 4.10.
