I'm sure I'm not the first with this question so here goes. I'm looking for a PSD and don't know if a new build 6.0 is preferable to a 7.3 or not. My son gas an '00 7.3 and it's bulletproof! Never had a problem with it but I've heard the 6.0(a good one) gets better mileage and of course, has more power. Also question the transmission. Not sure if the t-shift would be that much better with the amount of towing I'll be doing(not much). I'm leaning toward an '03 7.3 with its proven reliability and lower cost. Not sure a potential coupla MPG would be worth it to step up the price so much. As for the power I can always chip it as we did my son's. What a difference but the MPG suffered.
That's a good question, and one that isn't easy to answer. The 6.0 isn't having the problems it had when first introduced, but a solid 7.3 would be hard to overlook. With the price of new trucks today, I know what decision I'd make. I'd buy a good used 7.3, but that's just my opinion.
Quadzilla/Fire Rooster- For those who don't know, what kind of mileage should people watch out for...With PS passing the 100,000 mile mark things beside the motor start wearing down i.e. transmissions, brakes, etc. What would you advice to those looking as being a mileage you wouldn't go over...? Charlie
With the diesel I would be fine going to the 150,000 mile mark to purchase; however, that being said. I would also want to see the maintainenance records etc, as well as the history of the truck, was it hotrodded was it used as a tow vehicle, or a daily driver, any problems/remedies etc. These are simple facts to keep track of and for any used truck I buy I want this info.
I found 00' F250 w/ 89,000 miles for $18,900. 2nd owner, no fifth wheel. Used for commuting only. I asked him about the maintenance history and he gave me his VIN, the coolant color (Green) Prestone, and oil that he used 5W30. I'm not to sure what he gave me is good, so I asked him to do a coolant additive test. Will see what he says. Its hard for me because I'm in Cali and he's in Texas so I can't do the looks myself until I make the decision to take the trip down there. Whatcha think...?
The potential of the 6.0 really had me thinking when I decided it was time to become a big boy and get the Super Duty. But, I'm not one to recommend buying anything in it's first year of production. I knew that Ford was starting to work the bugs out... but. I decided to go with the 7.3 based on it's proven reliability. No regrets here!
I personally would want to see/drive the truck before I bought it. I would hate to see you go all that way to find a bummer truck too. So I guess it would be a judgement call on your part. It does sound like a decent deal though.
Hi Preditor, Why don't you ask him for receipts for the antifreeze additive ? When I bought my 00 PSD I heard all the horror show stories about the pinholes in the engines from not using it. I made sure I put it in every 15k, and kept the receipts specifically for resale purposes.
