I have a 86 6.9l diesel that has 140kms on new factory engine.
My trouble started when the truck started losing power and then
started spewing white smoke. The smoke is not engine oil or
anti-freeze. It definitely is diesel. It seems to be getting too much fuel but I am not sure. After having the truck towed home
I can start it but will only idle about 5 seconds then whitesmoke
it will then choke out and stall after a minute. While it is running the exhaust emissions will clear up for a second and go back and forth to clear then whitesmoke. I have checked the fuel
and aircleaner all seems fine. I also pulled an injector and checked the bypass check valve on the injector pump.It would be
great if I could fix this myself so any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
An easy way to check for extra fuel is to smell the oil dip stick. if you can smell fuel there is a problem. It could very well be one of your injectors has weakened up and is seeping fuel when it should be holding it back. this gives you too much fuel in the cyl.when there should be none it washes down past the piston an contaminates the oil. diesel repair shops should have a tester that applies pressure to the injector to see if it holds back the fuel till the correct pressure is reached then allows the fuel to be sprayed. this smell should be checked always when pulling the dipstick. also if the amount of oil goes up on the dipstick this can indicate that fuel is accumulating in the oil. running the engine very long with a weak injector can cause the cylinder to wash down,ie. no oil coating and become scored by the rings best of luck PHIL
I dont believe that you have a problem with too much fuel, more as an air leak in the fuel system. Try this, on the side of the fuel filter is an air valve, simular to one on your tires, while depressing the vavle crank the motor, if you get any air bubbles you have an air leak, if you get clean clear fuel you have another problem. I place my bets on an air leak.
Make sure that you use a remote starter switch when doing this, if you dont have one and are going to have someone crank from inside, remove the two wires on the top of the injector pump, this will not allow the engine to start.
