300I6 to... ?

Ok, I've got this '81 F100 Sidestep 2wd pickup 300 I6, all stock, except it's got a 3 on the floor..
I'm in the middle of swappin' in a 4 spd. 4x4 transmission off of an '85 Bronco.
Gonna switch over the front end and all the power/hydraulic stuff (breaks, steering, clutch.) I had just dropped all the stuff off the Bronco and decided to drive to Payson from Phoenix, and when I get back to Phx, It's got a horrible knock, and is ready to throw a rod. I don't wanna bother with takin' the 300I6 outta the bronco, I bought it for the 4x4 and power parts, and I don't think the engine is in very good shape. So I wanted to get a 302, 351, or something like that.
So, if anyone has done an engine swap from a 300 I6 to a bigger engine, and could give me some insight on it, I'd greatly appreciate it..

Just swap a 351W in there. Lots o' power, gas mileage is so-so 12-18 is average.

don't waste you time on a 302, I'd go 351W or stick with the 300-6, just my opinion. IMO the 302 really isn't all that great truck motor, it's great in a light car.

the 302 probably has more power add-ons than the 351W, although with the longer stroke to play with, you'll always develop more torque, way lower in the RPM range, which is crucial in a heavy truck.

i would say atleast a 351W. The 300 is a torque monster and a 302 in a truck seems like a v-6.

Here, I just posted this link in another thread a few minutes ago...

300 vs 351


Everyone is always in a hurry to dump the 300, even I was at first... when I bought my Bronco the first thing I did was go and find a 302 in a salvage yard so that I could swap them out. I never got around to the swap, ended up giving the motor away eventually, and I've had a 300 in every truck I've bought since until the last one. (And thats just cause the Braniacs at Ford couldn't figure out how to fit it into the new body syle engine compartmetn...) I can't wait till this 5.4 dies so I can try and retrofit an EFI 300 into my 99 F150... it wants to be a real truck, it really does.
