porting question

Well they say gasket matched are you supposed to port exactly to the gasket shape. Because on the exhaust side of a fe head there is a lot of material that would need removed. And there a lot on the bottom on the intake side. It kinda scares me that so much material would get removed.

i did this with my old set of heads. it worked but you don't want to get it perfect with the gasket. you wanna leave some meat around the gasket. this will ensure the gasket will seal right. your right though, it is a lot of meat to grind away at !! just have a good dremel tool and lots of bits !

Don't bother grinding the floor of the port down. The majority of the airflow occurs in the upper portion of the runners. Just smooth them to remove any casting bumps, grooves, etc. and try to keep them all the same size. If you open the runners up too much it will slow down the intake charge and can cause fuel separation(talking intake runners).

On the exhaust, dont port to gasket match, just port enough to improve airflow. You want that step there so it prevents reversion, where a pulse of exhaust tries to "get back in" so to speak. Leave the gasket matching to the intake.

Another note: you don't want to "polish" the intake ports. If they are super smooth, fuel will tend to drop out of suspension in the air/fuel mixture and "puddle" in low or slow flowing parts of the runner. Polish the exhausts until they shine(chambers too!), but leave the intake ports slightly rough.

Good point rusty70f100!
