The shift kits will help prolong the life of your transmission by firming up shifts (limiting torque convertor slippage). They help whether you tow or not. I don't know what transmission you have, but some folks with the E40D and 4R100 get a Sonnax Valve and Tricumulater Springs (spelling???) which are about $40 from what I understand and it basically does the same thing.
I have a 1979 F250 with a C6 trans. 460 engine with a Dana 60, 3.54 gears.
I want to use this truck to tow my 24' race car trailer, about 7,200 lbs. total.
Do they make shift kits for trucks that old? I think you might have a hard time finding one. You might consider the other mods I suggested instead of trying to find a shift kit. You also might consider posting this in the transmission forum. You'd probably get a lot more responses. I can only tell you what other people have done because I drive a manual transmission truck.
Yes, you can get a shift kit for a C6, which is one of the longest running production and most popular Ford auto trannys ever made. Check out B&M and TransGo for shift kits and other trans parts/upgrades. Go to www.summitracing.com to check out some of thier C6 products. A TransGo shift kit and green or black stipe modulator for my C6 is next on the list for things to be done to my F350...
Thanks for all the help, I installed a B & M shift kit today. I am happy with the way the truck shifts. I will hook up my trailer next week and see how it works towing.
