My 36,000 mile 2002 Expedition seems to have developed a right rear noise that sounds like I'm running over rumble strips. The noise seems to occur only when coming off accleration and somewhere in the 50 mph / 1500 rpm range. The noise has no real pattern, one day it's there and the next day it's gone. When it does occur it's very short, maybe 2 to 3 seconds and it's gone. My dealer said he couldn't reproduce the noise when it was in for service at 35,000. What is the noise coming from?
I would take it back right now, since you are right at the end of your warranty and insist on taking the shop foreman for a ride so he can hear it. Since you reported it while under warranty they must repair it under warranty, so dont let it go too long. I dont know what the source of the problem is, but if a tech didnt hear it the first time doesnt mean it doesnt exist, and if you wait a year they can bail on the repair. 35000 miles is no time to be finding "no fault found" on a problem you definitely can reproduce.
Vehicles have an odd propensity to not do what you complain about when they are in shop, whether its due to weather conditions, operating temperatures or what ever. Go out and get it good and warm and get the vehicle to an operating condition that you can reproduce it consistently and take it to the dealer and insist on a road test while you are there.
Sometimes you have to "help" the diagnostic process along. Of course if you have a premium care extended warranty you have less to worry about, but if you only have base warranty, now is the time to address the problem with the dealer.
