Change O2 sensor question

I bought a new bosch o2 sensor for my 86 EFI F150. Just a quick question, how often should you change it? They say 25K, but is that just to get you to buy one more often? Will I notice any real mpg or performance increase? Does the battery need to be disconnected and the computer reset, or will it automatically learn the new sensor after a few days of driving? Thanks.

25K miles isn't unreasonable. If the sensor is running too lean, it will definately impact the amount of gas you burn. These days, a new O2 sensor can pay for itself real quick. You won't notice a performance increase at all.

As with any sensor replacement, there can be up to a 15% difference between sensors. Disconnecting the battery and allowing the computer to re-learn its sensor characteristics will give you the best results.

Well, my truck only has 43k original miles on the clock, but I'm sure it's the original o2 sensor. I figured after 18 years it couldn't hurt to change it, if I can get it out!

I have heard that you should drive your truck around a bit to heat up the exhaust pipe. Then it will be easier to get out. When putting the new one in make sure you put anti-seize on it so it is easier for next time (if there is one). Good luck!
