Oil question

So far so good, my new 6.0 runs great! 400 miles on the clock and all is well. In the upper 30's here in the early morning and the truck does not even fuss (starts right up and idles smooth, just like the old dmax). However, the real test will this coming winter.

I know this has been discussed before, and since the 6.0's HEUI system is very sensitive to oil level, I have a couple of questions for all of the 6.0 experts.

When I check my oil level in the morning before I start the truck (12-14 hr sit time), the oil level appears to be above the max cross hatch mark (hard to tell as the design of this dipstick looks as if it will pull oil onto the top when it is removed). However, after I start the truck and drive for awhile, and shut the truck off, I have gone back as long as 3-4 hrs. later and truck reads just below the full mark on the crosshatch. What gives? My only guess is when the truck sits that long overnight the oil in the high pressure oil rails is drained back down into the pan. Any ideas? Oil does not reak of diesel, nor does it leave a halo when dripped onto a paper towel (trick a GM diesel tech showed me). Anyways not a big deal, just wondering if any had ever noticed this.

Thanks

Wow,
I can tell that's going to be one well cared for truck !!!

My Ex wants you to adopt it :-)

It needs some TLC like that - I just drive the HADES out of it !!!

Ya I know.....being picky, but hey just got a new toy. I'm this way until about 2,000 miles and the new truck excitment has worn off. Was the same way with my old dmax (babied it to death) untill a couple thousand miles when it was really put to work hauling, towing, etc. Then it was lucky to get the oil checked once a month. Guess I've just read too many posts relating to oil level/type and the 6.0. Ok.....I promise I'll quit being **** about it.

AK1MKING, I think you got it figured out. If you check the manual, they say shut off the engine warm and wait 20 mins. There is still oil up in the high pressure system and rails. As much as 1.2 quarts.

SBV45 -

Thanks for that, guess I should of checked the manual. Makes perfect sense.

Tim-

Perfectionists we are! I will definately heed the advice of yourself and others on this board when changing the oil (i.e. very careful not to overfill).

Thanks guys, lots of good info here. I am enjoying this truck very much. However, I do miss the GM oil pressure gage though. A friend (loyal ford owner) informed me that the oil pressure gage on these trucks is really just an idiot light, showing the same reading anytime above 7psi? I sure would hate to pull a load around some of alaska's mountain passes at 8 or 9 psi, while thinking everything is alright. Has anyone installed an oil pressure gage? I'm going to add boost, pyro, and now thinking about an oil pressure gage.

Many of the gray beards on this forum, and with the 6.0... believe this was a major issue in the early days of this motor, and one, many of us never got across to the masses.
Some listened and followed... what has turned out to be sound advice based on knowledge of how these things work.

To absolutely no detriment to the motor at all.
