would like some info
hi Ya'll. My name is rick and I am in central La. I have a couple of ?s concerning my 2000 psd super duty 4x4 crew 7.3l td 3:73 rear end and a/t i think its an e40a possibly e40d?
I just bought this truck last month with 111,000 miles. 14.8 mpg stock.
Installed the older hypertech power programmer and noticed immedite increase in take off power, a drop of about 200 rpms (from 2000-2100 at 65mph to 1700- to 1900 at 65 mph), an increase in mpg to 15.7 to 16.3 depending on which type fuel, chevron diesel did best. According to the hyper tech program it added 50 hp and 108fpt so i assume that I am running about 270-300 hp and 550 to 600fpt. my questions are:
1- would a newer chip or programmer do better IE. fuel economy, more efficient engine performance etc
2- will the tranny hold up under increased hp also the rearend.
3- is it cost effective to go to a 4-5 inch exhaust and a rapid induction air system. what could I expect in fuel economy vs price
thanks for any help anyone could provide and btw I pull a 3horse gooseneck two or three times a month total weigh approx 6000-8000 lbs and I do not get on my truck don't baby it but don't abuse it either,
have a great day

Your transmission is a 4R100 which is basically an upgraded E40D.
1-you might gain some additional mileage with another chip or tuner, but you should be happy with any mileage increase. Normally when you mod your truck unless you have the "right foot mod" your mileage will not increase much.
2-you should either make some upgrades to the tranny or use a chip or tuner that firms up the shifts to reduce torque converter slip. This will result in less heat and less wear.
3-a 4" exhaust is all you need unless you start running over 450HP or simply like the look and sound of a 5" system. An aftermarket air intake like the Tymar or Ford AIS incombination with a larger downpiipe and 4" exhaust will help keep the EGT down.
I hate to ask, but do you at least have a pyro gauge? If not, I would suggest that be your first mod if you are running a chip/tuner already. I would also recommend boost and trans temp gauges as well.
