We have five of these trucks and this is the only one that is giving me a problem.
Takes about 15 seconds of turnover time to crank. During this entire time and for another 10 seconds it is blowing a huge amount of white smoke. All the trucks spew a bit of smoke, but this looks like a David Copperfield disappearing act.
Sounds like the glow plug relay or the glow plugs or a combination of the two. I'm assuming this happens when the engine is cold. Also you may want to check the fuel and air filters.
I am an employee who bought two of the work trucks for resale but have very little knowledge pertaining to diesels (I did find early in my employment that gasoline does not mix well with diesel fuel). I, however, am very mechanical and gasoline motor intelligent. So, are the glow plugs something I could take care of with ease and save myself some dough or should I have our service man do it? How can I test them?
Both the glow plugs and the relay are not too hard to change, but if it is under 100,000 miles let ford fix it under warrenty. Dont think the glow plugs are bad, more than likely the glow plug relay (silonoid) is bad. But it is not cheap from ford, so if under warrently let them fix it.
