we are having a number of small problems and are thinking of selling our old '93 XLT. the number one concern we have is when shifting into reverse i waits then clunks into gear, also when you go from coasting to acc (not hard) it gives a good clunk. would that be the touqe converter or do i have a bad rear end, u-joints? any ideas? the car has 163k on it and the trannny has never been touched. im told that this is a mericale(sp?) in these cars....the first to second shift is harsh and the kickdown is anything but passenger freindly. when accelerating up a long grade in OD a grinding noise comes from the tranny. and lastly the front left side has some sort of weird loose rattle i have had that tire off 3 times pushing on stuff, hitting, kicking, and looking but couldn't find any problems same with my mechanic. what should i expect or do about this? has anyone had any of these happen what was the cause?
Check your trans fluid level if you haven't allready, but if that is still full, I have to say I'd suspect the trans being the cause of your problems. Every trans guy I've talked to has said that the A4LD trans is fairly problematic especially if the fluid and filter isn't changed regularly. As far as the rattle goes does it do it at idle, turning, highway speeds, ext?
try kicking front tire when brakes are cold.....if ya hear a rattle have someone get into van and step on brakes,,,,if no rattle,,it may be your pads are lose in the brackets,,,aftermarket pads dont fit to good and some rattle like a good thing when driving down the road.....i just fixed mine with anti rattle clips from FORD...
That's a tough one. My 92's tranny went out at 167K and the rebuild was $1700 with a 2 year warrenty. That is about what the van was worth.
I paid it because I know the maintenance history of the van and only an aerostar or safari can meet my families needs. I prefer the aerostar for a few reasons. The short of it is that I could not replace the van and get it into shape for the price of a transmission.
If you like the van and you have kept up on the maintenance concider keeping it. If you are tire of looking at it, the engine burns 1 quart per mile, and you need an excuse to trade it, in here is your chance.
If you need a tranny shop I would suggest checking the BBB and touring their shop first.
Good Luck
